Clever. And yes, factory farming is pretty dreadful. Unfortunately,
as long as people value cheap groceries so highly, it's not likely to
change. Short of going veggie, I'm unaware of any way to avoid food
produced in a factory farm without increasing one's cost of living.

Blame Wal-Mart for part of it. They expect prices to go down every year on
things like groceries.

I think they have a good reason, however, considering those people who
has no food in Afica. If price goes down, people would be likely to
donate more food.

But if consumers didn't demand cheaper groceries, Wal-Mart wouldn't
supply them. It's a vicious circle, but with the poor level of
understanding about global issues among most people, it's not likely to
break any time soon without external intervention.

Food isn't actually a terribly useful thing to give during a famine,
unless it's something that's easily transported and doesn't spoil, like
grain.

Everything's a tradeoff. If you want the cheapest food possible, that
means mass-produced in factory farms. If you don't mind paying a bit
more, you can pay for "friendlier" food. I don't necessarily see it as a
"vicious cycle," and in most cases don't think there should be external
(governmental) intervention. Perhaps it's because I live in a fairly
liberal area and hence there is more demand, but I haven't noticed a lack
of such items in my region. Standard mass-produced stuff still
dominates, of course, but from "organic" food to free-range meat to "fair
trade" produce, I can find it nearby (either in a small corner of the
nearby large chain grocery store, or at smaller local specialty grocery
stores). Frankly, I think this is a good thing--I have the option of
choosing what tradeoff I want to make, and which products I want to buy.

I personally don't buy these products very often, the major reason being
that it just isn't worth it to me. I am aware of the poor conditions in
factory farms, but still make the decision to buy factory-farmed meat.
Because of this, I am leery of "external intervention" that would reduce
my choice as a consumer.

I admire the causes of the Meatrix folk, the "fair trade" produce
movement, and similar groups, but (due to my moderate-to-strong
capitalist tendencies) I dislike how they rail against the agricultural
industry at large, disregarding some of the massive benefits it has
brought. Cheap mass production of food has led to more people being fed,
and has contributed to averting the dreary population/food crisis
predicted by Malthus. But now I'm starting to rant... ]:-8)~

Not that we don't have more grain than we know what to do with as well...

Heh. I don't think the Meatrix folks would oppose dragons hunting prey
in the wild--their main beef (ha!) seems to be with the conditions in
large factory farms. That said, I enjoy meat even when I'm in a human
body, and while I understand their concerns I'm not likely to stop eating
meat (or even to stop eating factory-farmed meat) anytime soon.

I eat Free Range Alberta Grade AAA Beef!! Not a veggie fan..... I have
yet to eat a veggie burger, and I won't, if I have any say in it. Two
nights ago (Saturday night) I had a 12oz steak, cooked prefectly rare!!
It was so juicy that the plate was drowning in it by the time I was
done!!

You'll want to come to Alberta so you can have the best beef in the
world then, since American politicians are still trying to punish Canada
for their lack of support in the Iraq thingy..... But they're failing
once again.....

You American draks should petition your MPs to get said best beef back
into the US, since there's absolutely nothing wrong with it!!

I have yet to purchase groceries from Walmart..... I purchase from
grocery stores. My meat, too. I'm not saying that they don't harvest
from "cell blocks", but my beef is always Alberta Beef, and I know
that's all free range.

Give a man a fish, after all..... Rather than giving food, wouldn't it
be better to teach them how to farm hardier crops and animals....?
Obviously it would take a few years to get them set up properly, but in
the long run it's a better idea than giving them free food.

Now, if you can manage to get ahold of one, there is a vegie burger by Boca
called the Steamliner (or close to that). Only sold to restaurants. It is
so well constructed it fooled three people into thinking it was real meat.
It had the texture, the flavor, and the color of ground beef. Not saying
that you NEED to try one, or anything.

Mmm, yes....*drools.*
My grandmother managed to slow-cook a pot roast. Like 200 degrees (f) for
HOURS. Still red in the middle. Oh GODS that was the best meat I ever had.

That would present a problem, I agree. However, there are ideas such as
irrigation, and if you dig deep enough even in a desert, you'll find
water..... The problem there isn't the food or the growing, it's the
singular fixation humans have with money, thinking that if nobody gives
them vast amounts of it, they won't do anything to help.

Same with the Tsunami stuff. They're setting out collection bins for
money for this. They should be setting out collection bins for food,
clothing, medicines, etc, since those are all needed more than
money.....

lol...
I like meat occassionally, mainly bird, but I don't like factory farms
at all. However, I tend to be more interested in my own health. Big
steaks ringed with fat just make me feel nasty... If that causes me to
eat more like a veggetarian, good for it. I normally just eat foods
with meat added in, like chicken soup.

My point was actually that it was my mom that ordered it and she's
vegetarian. Halfway through the burger she stopped and asked me and my dad
to taste it. We all swore it was meat.

If you're referring to "Give a man a fish...," then, no--it's not from
the Bible. I believe it's a Chinese proverb.

Smiley or no, that's not very nice, nor is it accurate.

If you're against the fat, then cut it off. Just do yourself a favour
(and a flavour) and cut it off /after/ it's cooked, since a lot of the
flavour is in the fat, plus if you cut it off before you cook it, it'll
dry out like old shoe leather.
